Church & Place

In eras gone by, churches sat at the intersections of life. Important civic conversations flowed through the faith community as they trickled through society. But in most cities today, the church and its leaders sit at the periphery of these conversations. Mark Batterson and D.C.’s National Community Church have placed themselves back in the center of community life by hosting church in a local theatre and launching a celebrated, urban coffee shop on Capitol Hill. In this talk, he challenges our assumptions of the role of place in churches’ pursuit of the common good.

Mark Batterson serves as Lead Pastor of National Community Church, one church with seven locations in Washington, DC. Mark is the author of New York Times Bestseller The Circle Maker, In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, Wild Goose Chase, and Primal. Mark lives on Capitol Hill with his wife, Lora, and three children.
