Church
Ethos of Discipleship
by
Alan Hirsch
Fundamentally, obedience to Jesus is the heart and soul of Christian discipleship. In order for Christians to properly disciple, they must interpret the current culture and adapt the teachings of Jesus to the surrounding context. Listen as Alan Hirsch shares his heart for the American Church and what being a missional disciple requires.

There seems to be a global and a local cultural tension in any setting that the gospel has to address. I live in Kenya (Africa) and I am trying to comeup with a discipleship manual contextualised for the urban christian in Nairobi but not detached from the global christian. I guess since we are other worldly Jn.17 but in this world then God's word should be able to address both settings with their own peculiar cultural differences.

Thank you for encouraging people like us...we are looking for better ways to impact our local setting.

I really appreciated how Hirsch encouraged us to get back to Christ--knowing that our Christology determines our missiology which shapes our ecclesiology. As a youth pastor its so easy to get caught up in the ecclesiology. There are so many programs going on all the time that we as a church have made it very difficult to get out into the settings where people gather to try to understand the culture.
Do you think that the church staff should be foremost in going outside the church community to engage culture, or should we be equipping those in the church to go? Can we equip without having been there first? How can we as leaders get out of church program's monopoly of our time and energy?

The real world we live in is a reality.Alan Hirsch , is poistive towards church understanding the Missio Dei in a Post - Christendom era .
This summer I led on a community outreach on my estate , which ov er 1000 people attended in the North west of England . Young people who do not attend church said that they have never heard the gospel preached this way before. In short, the gospel needs to be cross cultural, and the church needs to be aware of this this to address the needs of a secular society. For too long the kingdom of God has been presented by the church, asa fortification, rather than an opportunity to embrace a new generation.
